Have You Ever Used Greased Lighting?

I was introduced to this about 5 years ago and have been a big fan every since. I am personally one who doesn't buy a lot of fancy cleaners, and it is not for frugal reasons although I do like that part of it. I have been in the cleaning profession as my career for many years and have found that you really only need a few basic items to get the job and squeaky clean.

This happens to be one of those stable products. I was working a second job at the time at IHOP and they would have us carry the food with out a tray so when stacking the food you would inevitably have a greasy apron everyday. I had tried different things and it was still the same. Then one day a coworker ask me if I had tryed Grease Lighting. I have never figured out why I never ask her what she used before when she came looking like her first day on the job everyday and I knew she was not getting new aprons. In my defense I was 8 1/2 months pregnant at the time so my thinking was a little altered at the time.

Anyhoo she goes to tell me that it would total keep my apron grease free and it was cheap. So I go the store and get some and it worked like magic. So I thought boy I am going to to try this on other things and see what happens. Well low and behold this is a miracle in a bottle. You name it can clean it. Soap scum whatever. It is FANTASTIC on baby laundry. Formulas stains it is the bomb. Not to be inappropriate but if you have a skid marks in your DH or DS underwear you will love this product.

Love Making It Yourself - Homemade Cleaners

Here is a list of some homemade cleaners that really work well. I hope you will find some that you find useful too!

1. Whiter Than White Appliances...

Mix 1/2 cup of bleach, 8 cups of water and 1/2 cup baking soda. Then rinse well with clean water and dry thoroughly. Then rinse again with 1 cup of vinegar and 1 tsp. of lemon juice. Buff to a shine. ( Caution DO NOT USE ON STAINLESS STEEL or DO NOT MIX VINEGAR WITH BLEACH.)

2. Stainless, Stainless Steel...

Remove fingerprints by wiping down with baby oil. Rinse it off with club soda.

3. A Fresh Fridge...

Wipe the inside of your fridge periodically with vinegar not only will it stay fresh, but will prevent mildew build up.

  • A weak solution of club soda and a little salt can also get your fridge fresh.

4. What To Get Rid Of Freezer Odor...

Place a loaf or two of bread in your freezer for 3 or 4 nights. ( This is why I hate frozen bread. It take like what ever is in your freezer, so I know it works).

5. Stove Top Cleaning...

Mix equal parts warm water and ammonia. Apply, wait 30 seconds then rub as necessary.
  • Rubbing alcohol can bring a shine to your stove top.
  • To clean and shine those messy chrome burner trim-rings, rub well with a paste of vinegar and cream of tartar.
6. Oven Spills...

When oven spills occur, sprinkle with a mixture of one part cinnamon and 6 part table salt. When the oven is cool, wipe up the mixture. Not only will it absorb the spill but it will remove burnt food odors.

7. Oven Racks...

Place your oven racks in a garbage bag and throw in a ammonia-soaked cloth. Seal tightly and leave outside overnight. Wash down well with water the next day.

8. Oven Window...

Got a brown stained oven window? Make a thick paste of water and baking soda. Coat the inside and let sit inside for 10-15 minutes or until completely dry then scour off with clean water.

9. Fresh Microwave...

To freshen and deodorize your microwave, place a heat resistant bowl of water with 3 or 4 lemons slices. Cook on high for 30 seconds.

  • Another great tip is to add several drops of vanilla extract into a heat resistant bowl of water for 30 seconds.
10. Cleaning your Microwave...

Take a heat resistant bowl with white vinegar. Heat and let it boil for a minute or so. Using a rubber glove ( it will be very hot) wipe it down with a soft cloth dipped in the hot vinegar.

Spring Is In The Air!

It's time to start gearing up for a through spring cleaning! I have some useful tips to help along the way.

1. The Button Scraper

Sew a large plastic or wooden button on the corner of a washcloth.

It makes a great scraper for those hard to remove pieces of food.

2. Rinse Aid

Buy a inexpensive watering can. It makes rinsing the tub so much easier.

3. No Plunger Plumbing

If you find yourself with a plugged drain and no plugger, just use a frisbee. Fill the sink with hot water place the frisbee over the drain hole and pump it hard, several times. It works pretty well!

Take a small square of plush carpet and glue it on a block of wood and whala! Instant shoe shiner.

Do not throw away those shoulder pads just yet also shine great and a great furniture gripper too!

5. Make your own dishwasher

Take a small baby food jar poke a few holes in the lid, Then take a sponge (cellulose is the best) cut it to the size of lid glue it to lid. Fill with dishsoap and screw on the sponge-lid for a great and easy grip dishwasher!

6. Pantyhose will make your floors sparkle

They will bring a extra gleem to your floor if used as a buffing pad.

7. Got a old shaving brush?

They are great for dusting fragile antiques.

8. Got a extra car scraper?

They are great for dust bunnies behind the fridge.

9. For hard to reach areas

For dusty hard to reach area a soft bristle paint brush works great.

The small sponge ones are great to and the hold soap and water well too!

Anytime I post things on my sidebars I am going to try to spotlight them to let you know a little about what I am promoting. Today I want to let know about Joe McGee. Until about four months ago I had never heard of him myself, but as you will find out I am a avid thrift store shopper. I am always on the look out for books, tapes or cd's of things that interest me such child rearing, home management, etc.

Well I ran across this tape series about child rearing by this minister named Joe McGee. After listening to it that night I went online to see if I could find more tapes and found he had many different series and books on family and marriage. I have since started to collect all of his different series and I also started supporting his ministry.

He sermons are great, he has humor and many stories of his family life etc. It is over before you even realize it. If you know about "Raising Godly Tomatoes" and like that style of child rearing you will love Joe McGee. I have not had a chance to listen to his marriage series yet but I am sure that it is as good as the parenting.

I have two of his books over in the pink box of things I recommend and even though his prices on his site are good I found that they are several dollars cheaper through amazon.

So consider checking him out you will not be disappointed. He also has a newsletter he sends out. Here is his link Joe McGee Ministries

Do You Know The Secret Behind "The Secret"

I usually drive to work listening to either my pastors sermons on cd, something educational, use it as my time of deep thinking. It happens to be one of only two times I ever have to myself in my day. The other is early in the morning when my boys are still sleeping.

Well today when I got in the car the radio happen to be on (which is rare since this is my think time) and for whatever reason I did not turn it off right away as I would usually do. The announcer was talking something about the power of words. He was referencing about something said in the media to do with the election or close to that effect.

Anyhoo I started to think about the what was said about the power of words. For years I have spoke up to people in my inner circle when they would speak negative things about maybe their situation or if they might have spoke negative about something to do with me. I did this not to be mean or holier than thou, but because I am a firm believer in you have what you say.

Many years ago I started to notice that this really was true time and again. So today as I listen to what was being said it made me think about "The Secret". Everybody was on the bandwagon of "The Secret" sold millions of copies and still selling millions I am sure. When the hype was on I was interested to. But I didn't want to spend the money to found out. I thought I will find it somewhere in a couple of months and see it for less or free. Well about a month ago I did just that I found it at the video store in the free or $1.00 section not sure.

So I got it and I watched only maybe five or so minutes of it before turning it off and thought wow people spent all this money to find out about something they could have know all along for free. All they had to do was read the bible.

If you think about it the whole "Secret" is basic principles from the bible and wrapping it in a "secular" package. So the world thinks this lady had this great vision and she took what has been there for thousand of years and claimed it as vision.

The basic foundation of "The Secret" is you have what you speak over your life. What does the bible teach us ? You have what you speak over your life. So if by chance you have not seen or read about "The Secret" Just open up your bible and you will see "The Real Secret".

I just finished a four part sermon that my pastor taught last year on Elevation of Finances and part two and three is about the words you speak over your life and the company you entertain directly affects you. It was a wonderful series.

So today as you go about your daily routine take a look at what you might be speaking over your life it might surprise you!

If by chance you are interested in hearing the series, if you will email me with your info I will send you a copy free of charge. Whether your a believer or not I think you would enjoy it.

Blessings,

What To Get the Most Out Of Your Gasoline?

With gas prices being what they are anything we can to get the most at the pump is worth sharing.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon.

In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor.

Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.
One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Fill up in the morning in the slow mode when your tank is half full but not when the tankers are filling the storage tanks.

Dryer Sheets Aren't Just For The Dryer Anymore

I love the smell of fresh clean laundry ( Another OCD Of Mine), so here I am again starting to just bring you another tidbit about something I had tryed and liked. When I had a flashback of something I did several years back waiting tables to prove my OCD of laundry smells.

I had gotten a table of two gentlemen talking business, as I approached the table I smelled the smell and for some reason it was very strong. So I took their drink and what not and each time I came back to the table I wanted to ask him what kind of fabric softener and dryer sheets his wife used. But I kept thinking Tammy you can't ask this man that he will think you are nuts! Well I overroad my instinct and ask anyway. ( At this point I am now giving you another tidbit of advice.) NEVER OVERRIDE YOUR INSTINCT EVER!

The man looked at me just like I was nuts. Beside the fact that I think I embarrassed the besus of him. So my OCD for laundry smells made me look like I escaped from a mental institution. Lesson learned.

Now that I have bored you with me my "I walked five miles in the snow" story. Here is the real post.

I ran across this I thought, WOW!

Now I can smell the fresh clean laundry smell and be resourceful too! I have used most of these for a long time just for the smell and can tell you it works well. I love them in my car.

US Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets away. I use them all the time I use it when I am working outside. It really works. The yellow jackets just veer around you.

1. All this time you've just been putting Bounce in the dryer! It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice.

2. Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.

3. It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often.

4. It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.

5. Eliminate static electricity from your television (or computer) screen.

6. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.

7. Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce.

8. To freshen the air in your home - Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a Drawer or hang in the closet.

9. Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.

10. Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew.

11. Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.

12. To freshen the air in your car - Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.

13. Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with Water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan.

14. Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.

15. Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs.

16 Eliminate static electricity from venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.

17. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.

18. Eliminate odors in dirty laundry Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.

19. Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.

20. Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.

21. Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and Storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh.

Hope you find a few that you can use.

Color Codes For Freshest Bread

Ok, so I started to make this post just to give you a little tidbit about knowing that you are getting fresh bread, maybe a odd topic to blog about but none the less I'm doing it anyway. But as I began to write I thought I might as well share with you about my OCD issues about bread.

You see I have to have fresh bread. I will not eat it after 3 days sometimes even less. I absolutely will not eat bread out of the freezer. Although this has nothing to do with the show I just think it tastes horrible.

I have been this way since I was a kid, but I really I only became OCD about it a few years back after I watched
a show on Discovery Channel. I tried to find the piece online to play for you but I was not successful.

The basic story was that if I am not mistaken after week or so the bread before it becomes moldy, starts to get little micro scopic bugs of some kind. It showed as people were fixing their sandwiches how they were all over the bread.

The one example they had used that stuck with me was a woman making a grilled sandwich and they were coming up through the holes in the bread to get away from the heat of the pan.

So every since I watched this I have been a little obsessive about my bread. I know there are those that this will not care but I know there has got to be others that would like to know this.

Just A Little FYI!

So now on with the original reason for making this post.

Did you know that is you can tell if you getting the freshest bread by looking at the bread tie? The color of the tie or plastic tab indicates when the bread was delivered to the store shelf!

They deliver 5 days a week.

Monday-Blue
Tuesday-Green
Thursday-Red
Friday-White
Saturday-Yellow
They do not deliver on Sundays.

So there you have it I hope you will find it useful!

P.S.
I apologize if I grossed anyone out about the bread story but I was glad to find it out and I hope you will too!

Buying The Gifts You Want Without Spending More Than You Can Afford!

Most all of us have quite a list of people we need to buy gifts for thru out the year, whether it be birthdays, Christmas, etc. If you are like me I like to be able to give them something nice that they would use and enjoy. Usually to do this is it means you have spend hundreds maybe even thousands of dollars according to how many you have to buy for thru out the year.

But if you just take the time to do a little pre-planning this does not have to be the case. Over at Money Saving Methods she explains exactly what I am talking about. Once you start it will become second nature to do as it is with me.

This does not just apply to gifts you can also use this in everyday life. The Dollar Stretcher has a article with several good lists of off peak buying.

You will be amazed at how much you will save!
